Kubla Kahn by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Like many English students the poetry section of the course generally consists of me putting my head on the desk and sleeping as the teacher babbles on about the significance of metaphors, onomatopoeia, similes blah blah blah and their contribution to the meaning of blah blah blah

BUT all that has now changed. I am in love with this poem

Coleridge was high on Laudanum (which contained Opium) when he had a dream, woke up and recorded it until he was called to the door of his house by a friend. This interrupted his thoughts so he subsequently forgot the rest of the dream, and insisted ever since that it was never complete (although scholars debate this because it seems finished). But it is magical and enlightening and completely, utterly SUBLIME

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan

A stately pleasure-dome decree:

Where Alph, the sacred river, ran

Through caverns measureless to man

Down to a sunless sea.

So twice five miles of fertile ground

With walls and towers were girdled round:

And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,

Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;

And here were forests ancient as the hills,

Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.

But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted

Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!

A savage place! as holy and enchanted

As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted

By woman wailing for her demon-lover!

And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,

As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,

A mighty fountain momently was forced:

Amid whose swift half-intermitted burst

Huge fragments vaulted like rebounding hail,

Or chaffy grain beneath the thresher's flail:

And 'mid these dancing rocks at once and ever

It flung up momently the sacred river.

Five miles meandering with a mazy motion

Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,

Then reached the caverns measureless to man,

And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean:

And 'mid this tumult Kubla heard from far

Ancestral voices prophesying war!

The shadow of the dome of pleasure

Floated midway on the waves;

Where was heard the mingled measure

From the fountain and the caves.

It was a miracle of rare device,

A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!

A damsel with a dulcimer

In a vision once I saw:

It was an Abyssinian maid,

And on her dulcimer she played,

Singing of Mount Abora.

Could I revive within me

Her symphony and song,

To such a deep delight 'twould win me

That with music loud and long

I would build that dome in air,

That sunny dome! those caves of ice!

And all who heard should see them there,

And all should cry, Beware! Beware!

His flashing eyes, his floating hair!

Weave a circle round him thrice,

And close your eyes with holy dread,

For he on honey-dew hath fed

And drunk the milk of Paradise.

Grizzly Bear

I have been listening to this song non stop for months now. It is RAD and i particularly like the fencing helmet. On Friday night Claudia and i went to a fencing class to see what it was like. Yes we did look super hot in our fencing attire but no unfortunately the swords are not sharp.

I really think this band is RAD. They are sort of a mix between the Beatles, Beach boys, Pretty things, The Nazz and The Zombies: very classic British Rock but with and edgy synth sound





Oh and the bands lead singer Nic Mckenzie directed and animated both of those videos

Random shiz of the stickiest kind

On a bit of a tangent but today our Photography class went on an excursion to an AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL historic house and gardens called 'MILTON PARK'. The gardens were incredible, they featured waterfalls, sculptures, a maze, hedges, paths, ponds and were sooooooo BRITISH!!!!!!!!!!
My photos weren't too bad either. I used my friend Polly Paradice (cool name huh) as a model and photographed her in various hats including; An antique Russian Arctic Fox fur hat, a sailor cap, a Fez, a boater hat, polo helmet and heaps more!

The Grindhouse inspired, exploitation film entitled ‘Machete’ will be directed by Rodriguez and star Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Stephen Segal, Jessica Alba, Rose McGowan and Michelle Rodriguez and probably hit cinemas in 2010
